I just heard about Vietnam in Movies, a tropical war-scenario with a lot of rain and jungle. This wasn´t what i expected to see when i started to travel the country in february 2010. But i was really curious about the remnants of the american war and the present of vietnam.

Now i want to find out how 30 years of peace changed the country and how it is going to be in future. Vietnam has one of the fastest growing economies in southeast asia. When i was talking to young people in vietnam i found out that many of them see theire future in migration. So how does it come that a country like this can´t offer satisfying perspectives to its youth?

The most common vehicles in vietnam are motorbikes and boats. Though i have an affinity for water i prefere a boat to noisy street travelling. I went on snorkling trips, small water taxis on the mekong river and a awesome two day trip in halong bay.

Theese books i recoment for Travellers and interested persons. The decision to go to Vietnam was just 2 month before we actually left home. So i couldn´t do much research before. Like most of budget travellers we got a Lonley Planet before we left home. The book contains a great roundup about history and culture and is irreplaceable for independet travelling. Just on your transport to the next location you want to visit you can check out what you want to see or where you want to stay. Important to know is that many sights or interesting things to see will not apear in this book, to find out you have to keep talking to locals. Also people wanting to sell stuff going to give you great information after the usual small talk. If you want to find a cheap place to live it´s also good to go arround an look by yourself. Many hotel owners raise prices after apearing in the book. Having a guidebook is good, but getting of the track was always worth.

Lonley Planet, Vietnam (Country Guide)

As well i found a great travelouge of a vietnamese american guy. He mixes his travelexperience with storys about vietnams history and the live of his family. I just finished that one and gonna read it again to be shure..

Catfish and Mandala: A Two-Wheeled Voyage Through the Landscape and Memory of Vietnam by Andrew X. Pham

And the popular book of american journalist David Lamb who has bee in the war for his job and returns 30 years later. He provides a lot of background information that one will not get easy in vietnam.
